Route 66 was a highway in the United States that was originally established on November 11, 1926.  It ran from Chicago, IL through Missouri, Kansas, Oklahoma, Texas, New Mexico, Arizona, and ending in Los Angeles, California.  It totaled 2,448 miles or 3.940 kilometers.  This route was popular path for migrants during the Dust Bowl of the 1930s.  Businesses along Route 66 were prosperous, but later they fought to keep the route open because the government bypassed it with a new interstate highway system.  Route 66 was officially removed from the highway system on June 27, 1985.  Portions of the route are open today and titled the “Historic Route 66”.
